"Me Falling For My Crush"

A piece of comedy that I have recently found funny is a meme account on Instagram. These memes can also be found on other social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. One curtain meme in particular that I found comical was a video of a girl falling down a waterfall. At the top of the video, there was a meme that said: “me falling for my crush”. Some people may find this relatable and also laugh at the fact that the girl is slipping and falling.  Monro’s “Theories of Humor” helped me to better understand why I found this meme funny because the superiority theory explains why we find the misfortunes of others comical. Not only is it funny because the girl is slipping, but because of the meme added “me falling for my crush” we are able to also relate it back to ourselves. Following the superiority theory, there are two reasons why we could find this particular meme funny. The first being the bad luck of the girl who is falling down the waterfall. Secondly, this meme is implying that when we begin to like someone we develop feelings for them very quickly and this is shown by the girl slipping and falling. This meme is relatable because we could have experienced these feelings and find our own past “mistakes” funny.

  1. I've always wondered why "crush" humor is so popular, especially when it shows awkward or cringeworthy failures. I suppose it is related to "epic fail" humor in general.
